Yevgeny Nepoklonov, Deputy Head of the Rosselkhonzadzor and Chief Veterinary Officer of Russia, addressed a letter to Vasily Pivovar, Chief Veterinarian of Belarus. In the letter Yevgeny Nepoklonov informed of the fact that tests of products manufactured by Bobruysk and Mogilev meat processing plants located in Mogilev Oblast of Belarus demonstrated African swine fever virus genome. This is a major violation of the veterinary and sanitary requirements of the Customs Union and Russia and it could facilitate further spread of African swine fever. In this respect the Rosselkhoznadzor requested the Veterinary Service of Belarus to investigate causes of African swine fever virus genome presence in the products of Bobruysk and Mogilev meat processing plants and to take measures for prevention of exportation of products non-compliant with the RF and CU requirements into Russia.

It was recognized at the meeting of the European Parliament Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development that the disease spread significantly damaged economies of Baltic countries and Poland. In judgement of the Committee members, inadequate measures of the European Commission and refusal from farmers’ support resulted in the further spread of the disease. So, for example, only one million of euro was allocated to all Polish farmers. At present Baltic countries and Poland present a buffer zone but in the absence of effective measures African swine fever will strike a severe economic blow on other countries.
