Negotiations between the Rosselkhoznadzor and the Head of the Central Administration of Plant Quarantine Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Ahmed Kamal El-Attar, were held on October 13.
The participants of the meeting highlighted the high level of interaction between the two countries' departments.
The Egyptian side raised issues related to the supply of potatoes to the Russian Federation. It was noted that in the spring of 2020, two shipments of these products exported from Egypt to Russia contained a dangerous quarantine pest – brown potato rot (Ralstonia solanacearum (Smith) Yabuuchi et al). The Rosselkhoznadzor imposed ban on products imported from the infested areas.
During the talks, Egyptian colleagues asked to reduce the areas under the restriction. The Rosselkhoznadzor said that they were expecting materials from the Egyptian side favoring the possibility of making such a decision. In addition, the Russian Ministry stressed the importance of containment and eradication of dangerous quarantine pests on the land plots, where products imported to Russia had been grown.
It was also announced that earlier, in 2018, the Rosselkhoznadzor had imposed a ban on the import of quarantined products from three other potato growing sites in Egypt due to the detection of brown rot in the shipments.
The Russian side said that they were waiting for their foreign colleagues to provide detailed information on the measures taken after the disease detection. The materials should contain information about all the tests conducted by the Egyptian office and their results over a period of three years. The Rosselkhoznadzor is ready to study the information and decide whether it will be possible to lift the ban on the import of controlled goods from these territories.
During the meeting, the parties also came to a conclusion that it was necessary to exchange notifications in case any quarantine pests were detected in quarantined products delivered through the trade representation of the Russian Federation to the Arab Republic of Egypt.
