On February 14, Sergey Dankvert, Head of the Rosselkhoznadzor, met with Bogdan Igic, State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia, in Moscow. A representative of the Serbian Embassy in Russia took part in the talks.
The parties discussed in detail all areas of cooperation and expressed satisfaction with the level of trade between the countries. It was noted that in 2019 Serbia delivered about 200 thousand tons of seed and stone fruits to the Russian market. In the near future, the parties intend to complete the procedure for integrating the Serbian information system with the Russian Argus-Phyto FGIS, which will not only ensure traceability of fruit and vegetable products, but also increase the volume of deliveries.
Meanwhile, Russia is interested in increasing the export of livestock products to Serbia, in particular, of meat and dairy products. The parties agreed to intensify work in this direction.
Emina Milakara, Director of the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture of Serbia, spoke in detail about the situation regarding ASF in the country (the first ASF outbreak was officially notified in August 2019), as well as about control measures taken at the state level. It was noted that the spread of ASF in Serbia is caused by two reasons - virus introduction into the wildlife and inability to effectively control it as well as the human factor.
Sergey Dankvert noted that ASF control is a complex and long-term process. In Russia, regionalization and compartmentalization are considered effective tools to prevent the disease spread and to increase pork production. In addition, electronic veterinary certification allows traceability of goods and prevents their movement form the establishments with low biosecurity level to the superior. These measures allowed to increase the production of pork and to significantly reduce its import. Thus, only 80 thousand tons of such products were imported to Russia for the whole of 2019.
While discussing this topic the Serbian party invited experts from the Rosselkhoznadzor and its research centers to visit the country to exchange experience, knowledge and to conduct consultations on ASF control.
