On May 28, a regular meeting of the Regional Commission on Transboundary Animal Disease Control in the Caucasus region took place within the framework of the 87th General Session of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) (Paris). The participants of the meeting included representatives of national veterinary services of the Russian Federation, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran and Turkey, national reference centers as well as international organizations such as the OIE, FAO and EuFMD. The Russian Federation was represented by the Rosselkhoznadzor and FGBI “ARRIAH” staff members.

In the course of the meeting the representatives of the countries delivered reports on the current epidemiological situation for FMD, lumpy skin disease, PPR, sheep and goat pox and on measures taken by the countries to control the propagation of those dangerous diseases and prevent their introduction.

In the conclusion of the meeting the participants agreed to set up a special expert panel to elaborate a harmonized approach to the use of products for special prevention of infectious animal diseases (vaccination). The parties also reached a decision to admit Iraq to the regional commission. Besides, the participants deemed it necessary to enlarge the list of diseases by adding rabies, brucellosis, avian influenza and Newcastle disease.

In the conclusion the representative of the Russian Federation put forward a proposal to consider the possibility of designating the FGBI  “ARRIAH” as a reference centre for FMD, avian influenza and Newcastle disease diagnostics within the framework of the regional group.
