FGBI «VGNKI» Delegation Took Part in OIE Global Conference on Aquatic Animal Health in Chile

On April 2-4, Santiago (Chile) hosted the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Global Conference dedicated to aquatic animal health. The delegation of the Russian State Center for Animal Feed and Drug Standardization and Quality (FGBI «VGNKI») subordinate to the Rosselkhoznadzor took part in the event, the delegation comprising as follows: Head of Department of Genetic Diagnostics of Infectious Animal Diseases Svetlana Yatsentyuk and Leading Specialist of the Department of International Cooperation Elena Ermakova.

The Conference was attended by hundreds of specialists on aquatic animals. Scientists and specialists of relevant authorities of different countries discussed current issues in the aquaculture sector and ways of dealing with them.

Aquatic animals constitute 20% of consumed animal proteins for 3,2 bln people in the world. The latest research show that in order to satisfy the increasing demand for fish and seafood their production should double by 2030. Care for aquatic animal health is crucial for sustainable development of aquaculture, preservation of biological diversity and addressing sanitary issues occurring due to considerable production and trade volumes. In the course of the presentation of reports and sessions the experts discussed different aspects of aquatic animal disease prevention, ways of monitoring of cross-border transfer of such diseases, use of antibiotics and the needed introduction of international standards in the given field. The FGBI «VGNKI» delegation held talks with the representatives of the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries of Ecuador regarding the possible signing of the Protocol on Scientific and Technical Cooperation in isolation of disease agents of crustaceans and fish. The FGBI «VGNKI» specialists also met Dr Arun Dhar, Head of Reference Laboratory of University of Arizona on Aquaculture Pathology. During the meeting the parties considered possible participation of the VGNKI specialists in a training course on pathologies of aquaculture shrimps and diagnostic methods for crustacean viral diseases.

Besides, the FGBI «VGNKI» specialists held talks with Vietnamese ShrimpVet Laboratory Head Loc Tran and discussed cooperation avenues with the representatives of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service of Chile (Sernapesca) and the Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay.
