Rosselkhoznadzor Participated in ASF Ministerial Meeting-Consultation in Warsaw

On March 26, 2018 a meeting was held at the level of ministries and heads of veterinary services on ASF spread and prevention in Europe, including Russia, Belarus and Ukraine in Warsaw (Poland). At the event, the Russian delegation was represented by Advisor to the Head of the Rosselkhoznadzor Nikita Lebedev, Head of the Reference laboratory for ASF of the FGBI "ARRIAH" Alexei Igolkin and Russia's representative to the EU Pavel Kulakov.

Representatives of the European Commission, as well as representatives of the ASF-infected EU countries (Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Czech Republic, Romania) noted the dynamics of infection spread in the population of wild boar and domestic pigs, the importance of conducting a complex of monitoring studies, the need to regulate the number of wild boars and particularly emphasized that the situation is under control, the quantity and quality of the events are sufficient. In her speech German Chief Veterinary Officer Karin Schwabenbauer expressed concerns about the quality of ASF control measures in infected countries, and also presented Germany’s measures aimed at the prevention of the disease.

In its speech, the Russian delegation emphasized the need for EU countries to take comprehensive measures on monitoring with regard to illegal movement of pork products to Russia. The Russian side presented the latest facts of preventing illegal import of pork products of European origin under the guise of various building materials and other goods. The urgency of this issue was supported by the European Commissioner for Food and Health Safety Vytenis Anriukaitis who noted that that such facts also exist at the border crossing between Ukraine and Romania. 

In the course of the event, the proposals of the European Commission regarding the financing of scientific projects on the study of ASF epidemiology both in the territory of the EU and third countries were also considered.
