FGBI ARRIAH Takes Part in OIE Regional Workshop for Advanced Training on the World Animal Health Information System for National Focal Points for Animal Disease Notification to the OIE»

OIE “Regional Workshop for Advanced Training on the World Animal Health Information System for National Focal Points for Animal Disease Notification to the OIE” was held in the Republic of Armenia from 18 to 20 October, 2016.

The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) organized the workshop in cooperation with the national veterinary services of Armenia (The Veterinary Inspectorate of the State Service for Food Safety of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Armenia). Representatives from 53 countries of the European region dealing with OIE notification procedures took part in the workshop.

Official delegates from many OIE member states are getting more and more focused on the issues of the OIE notification and reporting procedures and their harmonization with the OIE Code chapters. In spite of the efforts taken by the OIE to assist member states in notification, the countries still have to face some difficulties when they prepare, collect and send the required information.

The OIE acknowledges the need for developing competences of the veterinary officials notifying on epizootic situation in different parts of the world. It will help to ensure better understanding of the process, to improve quality of the provided services and to facilitate the notification procedure.

The OIE workshop was also a platform to arrange a discussion between the countries and the OIE Information Department to ensure effective use of WAHIS and it helped the countries to exchange their experience.

Thus, the OIE put forward a proposal to two countries (most advanced users of the notification and reporting system) to share their experience:

- For the RF – Notification to the OIE on terrestrial animal diseases;

- For Norway – Notification to the OIE on aquatic animal disease;

Pursuant to the OIE invitation the Russian side was represented by Andrey Oganesyan, National Focal Point for OIE notification on animal diseases, expert from the Federal Centre for Animal Health subordinated to the Rosselkhoznadzor.  The reports made by the Russian and Norwegian sides and the proposed recommendations on improvement of the reporting system were highly commended by the OIE Department for Animal Health Analysis and information and by the workshop participants.

The workshop also helped the national focal points to upgrade their skills related to WAHIS use and it will increase quality of urgent notification and regular reports on animal diseases sent to the OIE.

Better knowledge about effective use of WAHIS data and the OIE Terrestrial and Aquatic Codes in the context of the disease notification will help to ensure transparency among the member states more effectively.
