FGBI VGNKI Delegation to Take Part in International Symposium “Global Past, Present and Future Challenges in Risk Assessment – Strengthening Consumer Health Protection”

On November 30 and December 1, 2017, specialists of FGBI VGNKI subordinate to the Rosselkhoznadzor, represented by Deputy Director, Head of the Certification Body Mikhail Matveenko, Head of the Department of Molecular Biology Ekaterina Davydova and Deputy Head of the Food Safety Department Renata Selimova, took part in the International Symposium "Global Past, Present and Future Challenges in Risk Assessment - Strengthening Consumer Health Protection".

The symposium was held in Berlin, hosted by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), and was organized jointly by BfR and the leading institutions in the field of risk assessment - France (ANSES), Denmark (DTU), the Republic of Korea (NIFDS). About 300 specialists from different countries around the world took part in the event.

During the symposium the most important issues of product safety were discussed, including the problem of antimicrobial resistance associated with the active use of antimicrobial agents in the diet of farm animals and birds. Taking the European countries and Korea as an example, the strategy of combating this problem was examined, the interrelation of antibiotic consumption with the dynamics of resistance development was shown. In addition, positive examples of the use of modern molecular genetic method of mass parallel sequencing for defining genetic determinants of antibiotic resistance, pathogenicity and other characteristics of microorganism isolates were presented in the reports.

In the course of the scientific program, the FGBI VGNKI specialists paid a special attention to identification of poorly studied pathogens of animal and human infectious diseases using the method of NGS (Next Generation Sequencing), using the example of the hepatitis E virus and norovirus, the outbreaks of which were recorded in 2001-2012 in Europe, as well as to reports on the identification of new risks associated with marine biotoxins.

The FGBI VGNKI specialists held a meeting with Director of BfR Dr. Andreas Hensel where they discussed the possibilities for scientific cooperation between the institutes in 2018.
